It has been a long day.
Tomorrow is the beginning of this weekend.
Okay. I've completed my lab report and submitted it in. Experiment 5 was like..shit! Sorry, I don't normally say it in this way. But it was some sort of messed up experiment for me. The product was really dark brown, like some chocolate drink intially. Lol. I didn't manage to complete the experiment. >.< How am I going to write my lab report? Hmm...
During lesson on British Studies, we watched a really interesting 1 hour video on Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady! Dogmatism. A controversial character. A confrontational one indeed. Really enjoyed watching it. Haha! I still have no idea what I am going to write for my EU essay. Think hard!
Sat for a small test for Organic Chemistry. Just 5 questions. Need to draw 5 arrow pushing diagrams. Overall was ok. Just 1 of it I don't know. Not too bad. Cuz I didn't really revise well for it. I was just told that we're supposed to write a 1500 essay on one aspect of Organic Chemistry. Gosh. Essay again.
In the afternoon, as the leader of the seminar, my tutor said it was a successful seminar. I think not. Cuz I still don't like to speak much. Lol. One of the two questions of my seminar is "What is education for?" I mean, we have been receiving primary, secondary and higher education for so many years. Yet, have we ever thought of the true purpose of education? That's why I chose this question for my seminar. Education is defined as a process of teaching and educating. To educate is to develop one's character and skills. Education comes from a Latin word "e-ducere" which means to lead out. In ancient Greek, Socrates once argued that the main purpose of education is to draw out what's already in a person's mind. Many think that education is to provide us with better job, earning respect, giving power and perhaps living skills. Is that really the true purpose? I think not. The true basis for education is to teach one to be able to think. Stimulate analytical and thinking skills. Eric Hoffman, a social writer, believes that the purpose of education is to produce learning individuals and not necessarily learned ones. Yeah, I totally agree with him!~
The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows
My second question for my seminar is "Do you think corporal punishment is an effective tool in education?" I expected most of my classmates to disagree. And they did. Yeah, we would agree on being nice to children would help more in changing their behaviour. However, according to a research done in 2008, there are still at least 87 countries in the world which do not prohibit the use of corporal punishment. The Bible is also often quoted as the rationale for corporal punishment. "Spare the rod and spoil the child". An English philosopher, John Locke also believed that punishment turn children into sensualists rather than rationalists. Whatever it is, I'm just glad that my seminar is over for now. ^^
Okay, next we had critical thinking class. We spent some time discussing about advertisements. Does it encourages unneccessary consumerism? Is the relationship between advertisers and celebrities a symbiotic one? Does advertising sell attitudes, values and lifestyles?
Maths. Tutorial + weekly assessment. Given 30mins to answer 5 questions. It's kinda hard. But this time I managed to do everything. Last week, I only got a score of 8 out of 10. T_T Really hope it goes well this time. =)
